Kartik Chauhan

Software Engineer & Distributed Systems Specialist

I engineer high-throughput distributed systems, database storage engines, and cloud platforms with first-principles mechanical sympathy β€” from Linux kernel syscalls (`epoll`, zero-copy `sendfile()`) and memory barriers up to Raft consensus, LSM-tree compactions, and event-driven architectures.

DATABASES & STORAGE 12 min read · Mechanical Sympathy

Mechanical Sympathy in Storage Engines: B+ Trees vs LSM-Trees

An architectural breakdown of read, write, and space amplification. Explains why LSM-Trees dominate write-intensive workloads through sequential append-only logs and compaction, while B+ Trees excel at point lookups via slotted-page layouts.

JAVA & CONCURRENCY 10 min read · JVM Internals

Demystifying Java 21 Loom: Virtual Threads, Monitors & Pinning Traps

Deep dive into Project Loom continuation mechanics, carrier thread unmounting, and why `synchronized` blocks and JNI calls cause carrier thread pinning. Shows migration patterns to `ReentrantLock` and `StructuredTaskScope`.

SYSTEM DESIGN 14 min read · Distributed Scale

Distributed Rate Limiting at Scale: Token Buckets vs Sliding Window Logs

How to architect multi-region rate limiters capable of handling 100,000+ RPS. Compares Redis Lua script token buckets against sliding window approximations, addressing race conditions and clock drift.

Linux Zero-Copy & Kernel Internals: Why Kafka and epoll Outperform Traditional I/O

Tracing system calls from disk to socket. Explains how `epoll_wait` uses red-black trees and ready lists to achieve O(1) scaling, and how `sendfile()` eliminates user-space context switches through DMA copy.

SYSTEM DESIGN HLD 11 min read · Capacity Math

Scalable URL Shortener Architecture: KGS Key Generation & 5-Year Capacity Math

A hot take that every senior backend engineer needs to hear: Java 21 Virtual Threads (Project Loom) do NOT replace Netty for high-throughput gateway infrastructure.

Virtual threads simplify blocking synchronous code, but if code touches synchronized or JNI that pins carrier threads, your pool deadlocks. For 1M idle WebSockets, Netty's epoll event-loop wins on memory efficiency.

Why LSM Compactions will quietly destroy your P99 latency if you only tune for write-throughput:

When RocksDB Level 0 reaches capacity, the compaction worker MUST merge-sort L0 into L1. If write ingress outpaces compaction, the engine initiates a write stall. Your p50 is 1.2ms; your p99 spikes to 850ms. Monitor rocksdb.write-stall-micros!

Designing Data-Intensive Applications

by Martin Kleppmann (2017)
⭐ 5.0/5.0 βœ… Completed & Synthesized
Reading Progress100%
"The definitive architecture manual for reliability, scalability, storage engines, and consensus algorithms."
⚑ Key Architectural Learnings:
  • LSM-Trees vs B-Trees: sequential write speed vs deterministic point-read latency.
  • Linearizability (single-op real-time recency) vs Serializability (multi-op transaction isolation).
  • Unreliable NTP clocks: rely on logical clocks or Spanner bounded TrueTime uncertainty.
